Bread of Life

John 6:35

Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty."

***

My quiet time verse. Does the Transformers song come to mind anyone? "Transformers" *transforming sound* "More than meets the eye". (I think the 2nd time is "Robots in disguise" haha... ok off track).

Points to ponder:

  • How do you link thirsty to having bread? Doesn't bread make your mouth dry and thirsty usually?
  • Why did Jesus use bread? Why not some fruit that can both fill our stomach and provide water? It might be interesting to note that Jesus has never said He is water (although Bruce Lee DID say "Be like water my friend" ^ ^). If you think He did, welcome to the club haha... Eh... at least in my NIV He didn't say nor imply la... Please correct me if you know otherwise!
  • Why do you have to go to be fed, yet only sit there and believe to be quenched? Why the distinction between the two? Which attributes of these 2 entities set them apart to be dealt with differently?

Lets not write off the possibility of God meaning this both figuratively AND literally. Isn't it possible to Him to give us both bread and water in the literal worldly sense? At the same time, can't He provide for our spiritual needs?

What do YOU think? Lets hear some thoughts and grow together :)

*PS: I hope the color coding helps link things back to the verse! ^ ^

hmm ya.. nv tot of it tt way tho!! gd observation!!

hmm maybe 'water' is used to denote blessings (like 秋雨之福;雨 = water) while 'bread' is used to denote God's Words, which means tt we have to be willing to read n receive His Word (needs us to MOVE). on the other hand, blessings jus need us to BELIEVE.

i dunno.. any1 else??!!

HOW DARE NO ONE CARES! I would like to contribute something beneficial, or at least show a point from a different view... But I realised I don't ponder over these questions if I were to read that same verse.

But one thing. "Believes in me" is translated as "sit there and believe". Eh, don't really agree that kind of believe is BELIEVE. Both coming to God and believing requires effort and courage. And so that's why the result is so rewarding! God is never courteous when it comes to His expectations of our sacrificial level. 一向来对神的认识:神总是狮子大开口,对于我们的成长,他从未有过“慢慢来”的计划。

Hmm, is this a contribution? 好像离题了吗?

不管咯!晚安!

Ok, to continue...

I think it is important that we make sure that our mouths are not so dry that we are unable to swallow any bread at all. Which is why God's blessings must be balanced by an equal amount, if not more, of BELIEF, aka. faith. How can you receive (eat the bread) if your mouth's too dry (lack of faith)?

There is action needed to receive His blessings, whether it is walking to Him or stretching out our hands to receive. What this translates into is perhaps coming to church, participating in church activities, giving our monthly tithe, actions that are consistant with that of a Christian.

Belief itself is internal. No matter how much you may declare or gesticulate, in the end it is whats within you that God would see. In this sense, action is not needed. However this doesn't mean you can slack in one corner. It just means that your action is not a measure of your faith. However, as stated before, we should behave and do certain things as Christians.

So there, make sure you have the saliva to swallow the bread before you ask for more!

Any violent objections? :p
