Nintendo Wii vs Sony PS3
Hopefully this post will help those of you who are thinking of getting one.
Lets do some basic comparison first.
SIZE
The Wii is like the size of an external CD-Writer whereas the PS3 is like a thicker version of those old VCRs you had when you were younger (it comes in a box that says 7kg!!!)
So those of you with space constraints might want to think about this.
MULTIMEDIA
The PS3 can play DVDs and Blu-Ray discs besides game discs, while the Wii can't even play DVDs (unless you mod it, but i've read that it wears down the drive real fast). However both are able to log on to the internet and allow you to watch your favourite content on Youtube or something similar full-screen.
Those who are looking for a all-in-one mulimedia powerhouse might be inclined towards the PS3. I'm more of the online type and i find surfing on the Wii more pleasant, plus it uses the OPERA browser!
GRAPHICS
If you compare the 2, the Wii is definitely a pushover. It doesn't even support full HD! However, if you don't own a HD TV set, like me, it doesn't really matter. PLUS, current games on the PS3 aren't even pushing the visuals. Its only minimally better than the PS2 imho.
STORAGE
The Wii only has memory card options while the PS3 comes in 20gb and 60gb models (recently saw 80gb models on ebay hmm...). However i'm still puzzling as to what i should put in my PS3. So far only installed certain games into the hard-disk to make the game run faster (still need the Blu-Ray disc to run). As for the Wii, i did try using my sis' SD card on it. Quite fun using the Wii's edit tools to do some basic editing of the photos hehe...
GAMES
The crunch, Games. Currenly both systems have limited titles as compared to the Xbox. However, the PS3 is able to play PS2 games, but only if the PS2 game is from the same country (note that PS3 games are not region-coded). For example poor me can't play my US PS2 games on my Asia PS3... SIGH... Anyone want to change? :p The Wii has the upper hand when it comes to game distributors as there are many companies who find it more appealing and are making games for it. I remember seeing a report that there are over a 1000 games in the making for the Wii while there are only a couple of 100 for the other systems. Hmmm... The Wii is selling like hotcakes too!
Personally, after playing Resident Evil 4 on the Wii, i simply can't play other shooting games on my laptop or the PS3 anymore. Its just so much better being able to point and shoot while moving about with your other hand. The Wii controller really rocks. My recommedation is the Wii for shooting games, period.
My Current Game List
Wii PS3
Zelda: Twilight Princess Ninja Gaiden
Paper Mario Virtual Tennis (Borrowed)
Trauma Centre: 2nd Opinion Resistance: Fall of Man (Borrowed)
Warioware
Call of Duty 3
Resident Evil 4
Mario Strikers
Wii Sports
As you can see, i'm not even tempted by any PS3 games... except maybe Ridge Racer 7, but its already an old game... don't really want to buy it and have Ridge Racer 8 appear the next day.
CONCLUSION
If you own a HD TV (1080p full HD preferably), am a sucker for top notch graphics and like having something powerful enough to run a nuclear weapon by itself, then the PS3 IS for you.
However, if game quality and innovation ranks high on your list, the Wii may be just your type.
Just for info, i bought the Wii when it was released in the US (imported) wheras the PS3 is a gift, soft of -..- I have the PSone, the PS2 and 2 x PSP, but i wasn't tempted by the PS3 at all...
Even now, i enjoy just surfing on the Wii when i'm not in the mood to play games, although i do wish they'd release a keyboard for it soon! Saw a wireless logitech keyboard for the PS3 earlier today going for $200ish >..<
Ok ok... if you want to come over and play games, be my guest. I have 2 controllers for each system and 2 TVs for them. Haha... Just waiting for the price of HD TVs to drop!!!
